Is Genshin Impact worth starting in 2026?
8.1Genshin Impact reviewed from a free account: 0.6% rates, 90-pull pity, the 50/50 and Capturing Radiance, and exactly where the resin cap stops your evening.

How we tested this game
Short answer
Yes — but start it for the world, not for the gacha. Genshin Impact is the largest and most polished free open world in existence and six years of regions are sitting there for a new account at no cost. The gacha itself is the harshest in HoYoverse's own line-up: a 0.6% base rate, hard pity at 90 wishes, and a 50/50 on top, which means one featured character can cost up to 180 wishes. Play it for the hundreds of hours of free content and treat the banners as optional.
- Play it if you want the biggest free open world available and you are happy to clear it with a four-character team you did not pay for.
- Skip it if the point of a gacha for you is collecting the new characters, or if a 200-resin daily cap will frustrate you.
First impressions
The opening of Genshin Impact has barely changed in six years, and it is still one of the strongest openings in free-to-play. You get dropped on a cliff, you glide off it, and nothing stops you. Twenty minutes in you have climbed something you were not supposed to climb and cooked food out of plants you grabbed on the way. The game’s core promise — the thing you can see is a place you can go — lands immediately and keeps landing.
For a new account in 2026 the first two hours are also a weirdly good deal, because the game you start today has six years of regions installed. Where a launch player hit the edge of the map quickly, you can walk for a very long time before you run out of new ground.
What the opening hides is the shape of the long game. Nothing in the first two hours tells you that your real daily activity will eventually be spending 20 resin at a time on artefact domains and watching substats roll badly. The adventure front-end and the maintenance back-end are almost different games.
The core loop: elements, teams and the resin economy
The combat system is built on elemental reactions. Seven elements, each pairing producing a named reaction with its own damage or control behaviour: freeze, vaporise, melt, overload, electro-charged and so on. You field four characters and swap constantly, applying one element then triggering it with another.
This is the system’s great design strength, and it is why the game remains interesting for a free account. Reactions scale off character level and elemental mastery as much as off rarity, which means a well-built team of 4-stars genuinely clears content. Theorycrafting here is about rotation order and uptime, not about owning the newest release.
Exploration and quests
The content pillar is enormous and uneven in the right direction: the best world quest chains in the game are better written than the main story, and they are free, permanent, and sitting in the back catalogue waiting for a new account.
The resin wall
Here is where the honesty has to come in. Original Resin caps at 200 and refills one unit every eight minutes — 180 per day from natural regeneration. Almost every meaningful farming activity costs 20 resin. So your character progression budget is, in practice, nine or ten domain runs a day plus whatever you banked while you slept.
That cap is the single most important number for a new player to understand, because it means time played is not the variable that determines your power. Days elapsed is. You cannot grind your way forward in a weekend.
The artefact problem
The resin cap is the famous complaint, but the artefact system is the one that actually ends accounts. Artefacts are the five-piece gear sets that carry the majority of your damage. You farm them in domains for 20 resin a run, each run yields a small number of pieces, each piece rolls a random main stat from a weighted pool and up to four random substats, and each of those substats then rolls randomly again every four levels as you upgrade it.
So there are four independent layers of randomness — set, piece type, main stat, substats — stacked on top of a resource you can only spend about nine or ten times a day. The practical consequence is that finishing a single character’s gear is a multi-week project even when you already own the character, and it is the reason long-time players describe the endgame as a waiting room. A free account should know this going in: owning a 5-star is not the expensive part. Making it work is.
Is it pay-to-win?
There is no PvP in Genshin Impact, which removes the sharpest edge. But the Wish system is the least generous of the big three HoYoverse-style gachas, and it deserves a plain accounting.
| Game mode | Free-friendly? | What slows you down |
|---|---|---|
| Archon and world quests | Yes | Nothing. No roster gate on any story content. |
| Open-world exploration | Yes | Nothing. This is the game’s gift to free players. |
| Artefact and talent farming | Partly | 200 resin cap, one per eight minutes. Hard daily ceiling. |
| Spiral Abyss (endgame) | Partly | Needs two built teams; doable free, slower to reach |
| Imaginarium Theatre-style modes | Partly | Reward roster breadth, which rewards pulling |
| Owning the new character | No | 0.6% base rate, 90-pull hard pity, 50/50 on top |
| PvP | — | None exists |
The published numbers: 0.6% base 5-star rate on the Character Event banner, flat up through wish 73, with community data placing soft pity around wish 74 and hard pity at 90. Your first 5-star on a banner is a 50/50 between the featured character and a standard-pool one; lose it and the next one is guaranteed. Capturing Radiance, added during the 5.x era, can override a loss and lifts the effective chance of landing the featured character from 50% to roughly 55%.
Run that arithmetic against the competition. Wuthering Waves guarantees at 80 and has no 50/50 on weapons. Genshin guarantees at 90 and keeps the 50/50 everywhere. Worst case for one featured character here is 180 wishes. That gap is deliberate and it has never been closed, and it is why the F2P subscore lands in the 6s despite everything the game does right.
The recurring purchases are the $4.99 Blessing of the Welkin Moon (300 Genesis Crystals immediately, then 90 Primogems per login day for 30 days) and a seasonal battle pass. Neither unlocks content.
What you get for free
Everything except the characters, essentially.
- The entire map and every quest, free and permanent. For a new account in 2026 this is hundreds of hours.
- The Novice Wish banner, which runs at a 20% discount and guarantees at least a 4-star in your first 10 pulls, with an early 5-star guarantee as you work through it.
- Free characters from story and events — the game has handed out several 4-stars and periodic 5-star selectors through anniversary and returning-player campaigns.
- Primogems from exploration: chests, Shrines of Depth, Statues of the Seven, oculi and puzzle clears. A new account exploring the back catalogue has a far better pull income than a veteran who has already looted the world.
That last point is the genuinely good news about starting late: your first few months of pull income will be higher than a six-year veteran’s, because the whole map is unlooted.
Graphics and performance
The art direction has aged better than the technology. Character and environment design, music, and lighting still carry it, but the engine shows its 2020 roots next to newer competitors, and the PC version has never had a rendering options menu as deep as its requirements would suggest.
The install footprint is the practical problem: it has grown past 100 GB on PC and continues to grow with every region.
| PC | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 10 / 11 64-bit |
| CPU | Intel Core i5 (6th gen) / Ryzen 5 or equivalent | Intel Core i7 (7th gen) / Ryzen 5000 series or better |
| RAM | 8 GB | 16 GB |
| GPU | GeForce GTX 1050 or equivalent | GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB or better |
| DirectX | Version 11 | Version 11 |
| Storage | 110 GB or more | 110 GB or more, SSD |
Cross-platform play and progression cover PC, mobile, PlayStation and Xbox Series X|S on one account, which remains best-in-class — your phone handles dailies, your PC or console handles the content.
Verdict
8.1 — Epic. Measured on content, this is a 9-plus and arguably the best value proposition in free-to-play: six years of a hand-built open world, free, permanent, and more generous to a new account than to a veteran.
Measured on the thing this site weights hardest, it falls short of its own family. HoYoverse built a newer, kinder gacha in Zenless Zone Zero and Kuro Games built a kinder one in Wuthering Waves, and Genshin’s 90-pull pity with a 50/50 still stands — with Capturing Radiance as a 5-percentage-point apology. Add a 200-resin cap that makes days-elapsed rather than hours-played your progression rate, and an artefact system that is RNG stacked on top of that cap, and you get a magnificent game with an economy that has not moved with the market. Start it. Do the quests. Pull only when you genuinely want the character.
What we liked
- Six years of regions, quests and events, all free and all still there for a new account
- Elemental reaction system gives real theorycrafting depth without needing meta characters
- True cross-platform play and progression across PC, mobile, PlayStation and Xbox
- Story and exploration content is never gated behind roster strength
What could be better
- Hard pity at 90 wishes with a 50/50 on character banners: a worst case of 180 wishes for one featured character
- Original Resin caps at 200 and refills one per eight minutes, so farming artefacts is rationed to roughly 20–25 runs a day
- Artefact farming is pure RNG on top of the resin cap — the real long-term grind is substats, not characters
- Install size has grown past 100 GB on PC, which is a genuine barrier
Final verdict
The best free open world, with the least generous pull system in its own family
Epic · Great
Nothing else gives a new free account this much to do. The regions, the quest writing, the music and the sheer volume of exploration are the reason this game defined the category, and all of it is free forever. The trade is that HoYoverse never modernised the Wish system: 90-pull pity and a 50/50 are worse than what Kuro Games and even HoYoverse's own newer titles offer, and Capturing Radiance only nudges the featured-character odds from 50% to roughly 55%. Start it as an open-world game you happen to pull in, not as a collection game.

Frequently asked questions
Is Genshin Impact still worth starting in 2026?
Yes, for the content. Six years of regions, archon quests, world quests and permanent events are all available to a brand-new free account, and none of it is time-limited back-catalogue. The starting experience is actually better than it was at launch because so much more of the map is open.
What are Genshin Impact's official wish rates?
HoYoverse publishes a 0.6% base rate for a 5-star on the Character Event banner, with a guarantee by the 90th wish. Your first 5-star on a banner is a 50/50 between the featured character and a standard one; losing it guarantees the featured character next time. Capturing Radiance, added in the 5.x era, can override a loss and raises the effective chance of landing the featured character to roughly 55%.
Is Genshin Impact pay-to-win?
There is no PvP, so nobody beats you with a credit card. Spending buys characters, their signature weapons and constellation upgrades, which means faster clears and easier endgame. All story and exploration content is clearable by a free account with a well-built four-character team.
How much resin do you get per day in Genshin Impact?
Original Resin caps at 200 and regenerates one unit every eight minutes, which is 180 per day of natural regeneration. Most farming activities cost 20 resin, so that is roughly nine to ten runs from regeneration plus whatever you had banked, before using Fragile Resin.
Can I play Genshin Impact on Xbox and PC with the same account?
Yes. Genshin Impact arrived on Xbox Series X|S on 20 November 2024 with full cross-progression, and PC, mobile, PlayStation and Xbox all share one account.
